Braking for Cancer….

SSBC has teamed up with Mary Coffey and her pink 2001 Saleen Mustang to promote Breast Cancer Awareness and Raise money to help fund breast cancer research. Mary will be traveling with a caravan of other supporters from Buffalo, NY to Burbank CA making many stops along the way to tell her story and meet many Mustang and car enthusiasts along the way.

SSBC has sponsored Mary’s tour with a complete SSBC Tri-Power brake system for the Mustang in a custom pink color. Yes big brakes are cool but how do they support cancer research you ask? This is the fun part! SSBC will be donating 5% of the proceeds from every SSBC mustang product sold in the month of October to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation!

SSBC found Mary’s journey and story a perfect fit as many family members of SSBCs’ employees are cancer survivors. With the support and drive from people like Mary we have the advanced technology needed today. The promotion of early detection along with today’s technology in medicine will help more people become survivors.

Mary Coffey’s inspiration comes from the loss of her husband to cancer in 2008 and the many friends who have been diagnosed with cancer. Below is her story.

Mary’s Story

My Husband was my inspiration to do this. I feel almost as good as I did when we had his fund raiser. By that, I mean I found hope, faith and love in humanity.

On June 20th, 2008, my husband lost his battle to cancer at age 42. Just two months prior, we held a fund raiser with the help of my closest friends. The people, strangers, friends, relatives, just came pouring in for a spaghetti dinner and basket raffle. It was a tremendous sight that took my breath away, had my heart and made me cry tears of sorrow and joy at the same time.

The story about the car:

The car was bought in 2007. Originally mineral grey, my son, David, and husband Bob, his stepfather, flew out to Kansas City MO to pick the 2001 Saleen Mustang up and drive it back. I had held the lien and with that said, made the promise to my son if he missed a payment, I would take it back and paint it pink. I don’t think I need to explain what happened there.   But before I took it back in 2008, I told my husband who was sick with Leukemia at the time that when he recovered, the car would be his. Unfortunately he succumbed to the disease before he had the chance to take ownership.

So here I was, stuck with a Saleen that had been t-boned six weeks after my son got it, repairs made, and in the collision shop for that year. The engine needed repairs and a promise was kept. Into the shop it went again to come out pink. I consider it the last gift Bob gave me.

It’s my turn to give back.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On October 1st, I’m leaving on a month long Journey with my pink Saleen Mustang to raise awareness and funds for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. I chose this organization for the fact that 90% of all funds received goes to actual research while only 10% goes to administrative feels. It is also a Better Business Bureau accredited foundation.

Since I announced my journey last November, I have felt once again the outpouring of hope and love from humanity. I have dealt with so many great people in putting this excursion together and my journey has barely started.   There are so many people to thank, so many more to meet and I can’t wait!
